I can admit that I've had one too many experiences with that and boy, that was enough for me know that if I want to really want to enjoy my trips, finding the perfect sleeping bag for me is a priority. For example, the goose down is soft and very lightweight contributing to the ease of travel when hiking. However, it is much more costly and if it happens to get wet, doesn't dry easily. Synthetic insulation on the other hand is heavier, bulkier, and not as soft. Yet, the cost isn't as hard on your pocket book and the wet weather isn't as big an issue because the synthetic blend dries in a quicker manner than its down counterpart. In either case, some type of padding under the bag is highly recommended.
Also, the best sleeping bags for summer are the ones' rated 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius (Yes, you should check the temperature rating). Otherwise, if it is still comfortable for you, you can just open up your sleeping bag like a blanket so it does not hold in much heat. Hence, you should prepare two sleeping bags according to your needs - one for winter the winter, and one for your summer trips. You also might want to pick advanced sleeping bags rather than standard for use in extreme weather conditions.
