Generally rectangular sleeping bags are very easy to store and transport as most are folded into halves or thirds, rolled up and then bound together with a band or tied with built in straps. You can carry them on backpacks or throw them in the trunk of your car for your next trip. Many are commonly used for overnighters at a friend's house and are generally called slumber bags. These typically will breathe better than your outdoor bags as they don't have to hold in your body heat as much. These sleeping bags are generally made for getting a comfortable night sleep. Children love these types as they will typically be rectangular sleeping bags and come in all different colors, sizes and designs from their favorite super hero to a princess in pink.

Also to consider is the wet or dry conditions. If you are backpacking on the northwest then expect wet conditions. Do not pick sleeping bags with down fill as it loses much of its insulating capability when wet. Choose light down sleeping bags only if you are traveling southwest where the conditions are desert dry. Choose those with synthetic fill for wet conditions.

If you are going camping and need a sleeping bag, don't just pick the first one you see. Selecting the best one depends on the intended use and how often you plan to use it. Since sleeping bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes and some were made for lower temperatures and retain heat better than others it is important to know which one works best for you. Choosing the proper sleeping bag for your camping style will prevent a lot of aggravation.

If you see a +20 degree rating that would mean that the bag should be warm enough for temperatures that are 20 degrees or warmer. And if you see a - 20 degree rating then it has been determined that the bag should be warm enough for minus 20 degree weather.

Everyone gets grumpy if they've had a bad night's sleep. When you're tired, there's little energy or little patience for very much. You won't have a very enjoyable stay if you spend all night tossing and turning, unable to get comfortable or feeling too cold. Come the morning, you won't be up for much. You'll be lethargic and miserable, and it will constantly be on the back of your mind that you have another night of the same to endure. And what if you're on a hiking trip and you have miles of terrain lying in wait before you? Do you think, with no rest throughout the previous night, that you would look upon this with excited glee? When energy and high spirits are needed, a good nights rest is vital.

The major difference between the two styles is the cut and shape of the bags. The mummy bag is more confining. You can think of it like your own personal cocoon where you can go to bed at night as a caterpillar and wake up the next morning as a butterfly. You're wrapped up tight with not a lot of room to move. The rectangular bed on the other hand gets its name from its rectangular shape and lets you move your legs.

Rectangular shaped bags are the most popular and most familiar. These provide you with more room for movement within, reducing that claustrophobic feel to some degree. Because they are of a square shape they can also be zipped to a second to produce a double sized sleeping bag, large enough for two people to sleep in. Or, if you completely dislike the feel of being zipped up, you can leave the bag unzipped entirely and use it as a blanket instead. However, these bags are often fairly big, and may not be ideal for hiking trips as they can be rather bulky and awkward to carry.

Make sure your down sleeping bag is completely dry before putting it away to prevent mildew, and clumping. If you use a dryer to dry it use very low heat. It takes a long time to dry a down sleeping bag, but must never turn up the heat or you will ruin your bag.
