Sleeping bags are either synthetic-filled or down-filled. Goose down bags are light weight and perfect for backpacking and on your biking trip. Renowned for its superior insulation, goose down is one of the premier sleeping bag materials made to keep the warmth in and keep the cold out. Synthetic sleeping bags are cheaper than down and usually non-allergenic. They are easier to take care of especially if spill is sponged off immediately. Sleeping bag fill will come in both short and long fibers. Many new synthetics use a "hollow fiber" method that keeps sleeping bags light and allows for good compression when packing, while still offering excellent warmth. Long fibers found in sleeping bags with synthetic fill are more stable and will be less likely to shift during use. Short fibers on the other hand, both down fill and synthetic, can shift during use, affecting your sleeping bag's loft and inviting cold air in.

Also to consider is the wet or dry conditions. If you are backpacking on the northwest then expect wet conditions. Do not pick sleeping bags with down fill as it loses much of its insulating capability when wet. Choose light down sleeping bags only if you are traveling southwest where the conditions are desert dry. Choose those with synthetic fill for wet conditions.

Tapered sleeping bags grow narrower towards the feet, providing you with a close fit. The closeness of these bags create more warmth inside whilst sleeping, however, the lack of free space restricts movement and may not suit many people. They are also smaller than rectangular ones and can be rolled up more compactly, making them easier to carry whilst on hiking trips.

The story goes that Freydis Eiriksdottir, the daughter of Viking Erik the Red, invented the first sleeping bag on her journey to North America in 1000, made from one of the sails of her ship. Of course, sleeping bags have come a long way since she sailed around the world, and the manufacturers have paid close attention to the needs of consumers, producing sleeping bags for every camping, hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, fishing and hunting adventure.

There are basically two types of sleeping bags. One is the mummy bag and the other is the "old school" rectangular sleeping bag. Now mind you, ain't nothing wrong with old school at all. In fact, it may be your preference once you discover what it's like verses the mummy bag.

In the middle of cold nights your sleeping bag will be your lifesaver. It is also a good idea to have a pad or a mattress underneath your bag to keep it off the ground.

Down sleeping bags on the other hand require special care. Wash it by hand with mild detergent. The best way to dry a down sleeping bag is to lay it out flat.

Before choosing a sleeping bag, it can be helpful to know what some of the key differences are between the backpacking sleeping bag and other sleeping bags. The needs of a backpacker lead to special considerations that the backpacker must address:

So those are the things to note. There may be other considerations in choosing a sleeping bag. However, I hope these ones certainly help you narrow down your choices.

Before you choose which sleeping bag to take with you on a given excursion, consider where you will be going. You wouldn't take the same backpacking sleeping bag with you on a trip to the Rocky Mountains as you would on a trip to the Louisiana bayou. Is the area you are going hot? Cold? Humid? Dry? Is it the rainy (or snowy) season there? What kind of temperature variations are there between day and night? A polyfill or synthetic type insulated sleeping bag will keep you warm better when it is wet than a down filled, but a down-filled bag will keep you warmer in frozen, windy environments. A simple nylon shell may work well in a warm, humid climate, but cold winds will cut right through it. Microfiber linings will work well when wet, and provide good wind protection, but can be heavy and costly. And of course, the amount of a given material the backpacking sleeping bag uses directly influences both weight and bulk.
